So long as you don't bog yourself down with too much trash (read: don't get an undergraduate degree in creative writing because it will KILL you with badness), learning what other people do wrong (or even what other people do that you simply don't find interesting or compelling) is a good way to be inspired to write and to self-edit.

I think it would drive me crazy if it was a constant thing – part of a job, or slushing for a regular magazine. But for the occasional project it’s definitely enlightening.
